What is nutrigenomics and does it have an effect on genetic materials in rosacea-effected cells?

Nutrigenomics refers to the effect of “Medicinal” biochemical substances in nutrients that we consume everyday and “Medicinal” extracts in pharmaceutical-grade Nutraceuticals. Bio-Medical scientists and physicians have learned over the last decade that certain nutrients and ‘high-end’ nutraceuticals can activate cells at the genetic level to increase the production of “good” genes, which then lead to increased production of DNA and RNA within the cell — resulting in the production of healthy proteins with strong anti-inflammatory and tissue repair actions.

Nutrigenomics can help heal and reverse rosacea-affected cells in the facial skin including inflamed cells in the epidermis, dermis, blood vessels, nerves and immune cells. This is an effective way to turn off the ‘bad’ inflammatory genes, turn on the ‘good’ anti-inflammatory genes, and produce healthy proteins and peptides to normalize rosacea-afflicted skin. This can have a profound effect on rosacea symptoms, triggers and progression. Production of healthy genes and DNA in skin and blood vessel cells is central to rosacea reversal and remission

Nutrigenomics can be Traced back to the 16th Century During Treatment of Scurvy Outbreaks

DNA Breakage and Destruction caused by Scurvy

Nutrigenomics therapy can actually be traced back to the 16th Century when countless sailors lost their lives on long voyages due to the spoiling of perishable goods such as fruits which were needed to keep Vitamin C levels normal and promote health.  When these fruits went bad, the lack of Vitamin C and other flavanoids blocked the production of genetic material necessary to produce and maintain healthy blood vessels.  This eventually led to a disease called Scurvy which resulted in inflamed, broken blood vessels and subsequent organ failure.  The most notable case of Nutrigenomics therapy during this time occurred when Captain Jaques Cartier, a French explorer had lost most of his crew to scurvy.  Many of the remaining sailors who had the beginning stages of this deadly disease asked to be dropped off at one of the nearby islands.  They preferred to die there rather than on board the ship.  On the return trip months later, Captain Cartier and the remaining crew were shocked to see the men, who everyone thought were dead, waving to them from the shores, alive and healthy.  The Native Americans on the island actually cured the sailors of scurvy with a tea consisting of concentrated pine bark tea.  This was the first noted example of Nutrigenomics and “Medicinal” foods.  Later we would find out that this Pine Bark Extract (similar to that used in Rosadyn) cured the sailors by turning on anti-inflammatory, healing genes within cells of dying blood vessels — reversing vascular death and promoting new, healthy blood vessels. A recent study published in Free Radical Biology sheds some light on how Pine Bark Extract (Pycnogenol) may reverse scurvy at the genetic level.  After 12 weeks of treatment with 75 mgs of Pycnogenol biopsies of skin blood vessels were taken from 45 volunteers.  The results were astounding.  Pycnogenol completely reversed inflamed, fragile blood vessels and activated genes responsible for the production of blood vessel strengthening Collagen Type 1 and Collagen Type II by 29% and 42% respectively.  This would explain why Pine Bark Tea reversed scurvy and is an excellent example of Nutraceutical-based Nutrigenomics.

Experts Agree: Rosacea is Primarily a Genetic-Based Disorder

National and International Rosacea Experts all agree that rosacea is a gene-based disorder.  The National Rosacea Society believes that while this genetic disorder may have multiple symptoms, subtypes, stages and triggers… the core of rosacea starts with the abnormal production of inflammatory genes that leads to a host of inflammatory peptides and proteins that wreak havoc in rosacea affected skin.  This is “Ground Zero”.  This is the ultimate target for a cure.  Genetic Therapy will eventually be an outright cure for rosacea, but the proper abnormal genes must first be identified and then safe gene-based treatments must be developed.  While research is ongoing, Nutrigenomics therapy applied through “Medicinal” nutraceuticals is a powerful weapon that targets inflammatory genes in rosacea-affected skin cells — blocking or reducing their production — altering the chronic inflammatory status of rosacea.

Nuclear Factor Kappa Beta [NF KappaB] is one of the Primary Targets for Nutrigenomic Treatment of Rosacea Sufferers: It is Nick-Named the “Master Inflammatory Switch” because it controls the Synthesis of Dozens of Inflammatory Substances Directly Involved in Rosacea Progression

Over the past decade rosacea researchers have researched many inflammatory substances involved in rosacea symptoms and progression.  Over this time period it has become clear that rosacea sufferers over-express a molecule called nuclear factor-kappa beta, which then ignites a chronic degenerative inflammatory cascade throughout the facial skin and body.  An abundance of new experimental studies, scientific studies and human studies have singled out this molecule as one of the core genetic causes of rosacea as over-activation of this one molecule can cause the production and release of dozens of damaging inflammatory factors for days, weeks, months, or nonstop.

Simply put, NF Kappa Beta is a protein that acts as a genetic switch to turn inflammation on and off in the body. Scientists describe NF Kappa Beta as a “smoke sensor” that detects dangerous threats like free radicals and infectious agents. In response to these threats, NF Kappa Beta “turns on” the genes that produce inflammation.  Unfortunately, in rosacea, this is an erroneous reaction that leads to all the signs, symptoms, subtypes and triggers of rosacea.  This then turns into a vicious inflammatory cycle that stays ‘turned on’ indefinitely.

While there is currently no genetic cure for NF Kappa Beta over activation, there are key Nutraceuticals that can suppress and even block this dangerous protein.  We will highlight four ingredients in Rosadyn that suppress this inflammatory response at the genetic level similar to Nutrigenomics and also help stimulate production of anti-inflammatory genes.

Review the complex Diagram below.  The only thing you need to focus on is the “Genetic Hot Spot” in the middle oval called the Nuclear Envelope (ie Nucleus of the cell where DNA, RNA and genetic material are stored) and where our Nutraceutical ingredients target NF Kappa Beta in an effort to suppress the production of inflammatory genetic material.  Our Rosadyn Nutraceutical has five primary targets within the Nucleus — you can read from left to right inside the Nucleus:

[1]  Coactivator
[2]  RNA Polymerase
[3]  Nuclear DNA
[4]  Target Gene
[5]  mRNA (messenger RNA which turns into the final inflammatory protein)

[1] Eastern White Pine Bark Extract (Pycnogenol Equivalent: 95% Proanthodyn Flavanoid Complex)

Eastern White Pine Bark Extract is one of the most potent inhibitors of inflammatory NF Kappa Beta activity.  This is one of the primary reasons this expensive pharmaceutical-grade nutraceutical was chosen and incorporated into Rosadyn.  This Pine Bark is unique because it is a natural blend of oligomeric proanthocyandins, catechins, epicatechins, taxifolen and phenolic acids — and all five of these bioflavanoids suppress NF Kappa Beta gene activity at all five levels mentioned above the illustration as detailed in Clinical Applications of Thrombosis and Hemostasis: 12(3):1-6, July 2006 and Cellular Molecular Life Sciences: 57(5), 834-841, 2000.  Interestingly, not only can Pycnogenol suppress the genetic production of inflammatory proteins, but it can stimulate NF Kappa Beta’s production of anti-inflammatory peptides and block well-researched rosacea substances such as Matrix Metalloproteinases (more effectively than ORACEA), Cyclooxygenase AND perform all these functions in skin cells, blood vessels and immune cells.  In many cases these actions alone can reverse severe rosacea back to moderate rosacea… or moderate rosacea back to pre-rosacea or remission.  This is classic Nutrigenomic-based gene therapy.

[2] Mediterranean Olive Fruit Extract (15% Oleuropein)

The Mediterranean Olive Fruit Extract derived from purified Italian Olive pulp extract contains several biochemical compounds including Oleuropein and Verbascoside that inhibit NF Kappa Beta production and genetic activation and, most importantly, blocks the formation of inflammatory proteins that cause rosacea to progress.  In an article titled, “Olive Oil Antioxidants Douse Inflammatory Genes” bio-medical researchers discuss Nutrigenomics in-depth with relation to Olive Fruit Extract and they further go on to explain Olive Fruit’s critical role in breaking long-standing NF Kappa Beta-induced inflammation in an excellent review article by the Science Advisory Board.  For those with long-standing rosacea that is resistant to most treatments this is a superb choice of treatment for your condition.

[3] Sulforaphane™

Sulforaphane is an exciting addition to Rosadyn because it has the ability to incorporate itself into an NF Kappa Beta cofactor that is required for the first step in the protein’s activation – and all subsequent steps.  In essence, sulforaphane blocks the rate limiting step and allows NF Kappa Beta and all its associated inflammatory genes to calm down and completely shut down this entire cycle…. over time.  This is Rosadyn’s “Reset” button.  It basically tells the body that NF Kappa Beta is acting erroneously, needs to be shut down AND then be rebooted so that NF Kappa Beta can actually help treat rosacea through the production of potent anti-inflammatory substances.  Sulforaphane, Pycnogenol and Mediterranean Olive Fruit Extract are three top-notch Nutrigenomic compounds that have important actions on rosacea’s underlying genetic disorder.

[4] Rosadyn’s Proprietary Phospholipid Complex™

Vascular Health Specialists® decided to incorporate a high quality phospholipid complex into the Rosadyn formula to help all three molecules pass through the cell membrane (made up of lipid membranes that are hard to pass through) and the Nuclear Envelope (also made up of a lipid membrane).  This proprietary complex increases bioavailability and bioactivity by at least 30% to 40% making Rosadyn especially effective and unique.
